Agricultural Microbiology and Phyto-remediation is a comprehensive textbook covering the fundamental and applied aspects of microorganisms and their importance in agriculture, soil health, plant growth, food systems and environmental sustainability. The book is organized into 20 chapters, progressing from the basic principles and historical development of microbiology to advanced applications in bioremediation and phytoremediation. The opening chapters introduce microbiology, microbial diversity, classification and the structure and organization of bacterial cells. The book then examines bacterial nutrition and growth, bacterial genetics and genetic engineering, providing a foundation for understanding microbial physiology and biotechnology.
The agricultural microbiology component focuses on soil microorganisms, soil ecosystems, nutrient mineralization and biogeochemical transformations. Detailed attention is given to the rhizosphere, rhizodeposition and plant–microbe interactions, followed by discussion of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and endophytes and their importance in sustainable agriculture and plant health.
